Start studying Polyatomic Ions. Learn vocabulary, terms, and more with flashcards, games, and other study tools. Polyatomic ions are formed every time a molecule must gain or lose electrons, so that all the atoms of the molecule can obtain the rule of the octet. In order to name them, you will need to memorize some of the typical polyatomic ions, but in case you have not done so, you could also look for a list of polyatomic ions. Polyatomic Ion. Polyatomic ions generated in the plasma, in the interface, and in the cell, have larger atomic radii than analyte ions of similar mass and statistically collide with helium atoms more frequently and consequently lose more energy. Unlike monoatomic ions, which are composed of a single atom, polyatomic ions are composed of many atoms. (The prefix poly- means “many,” as in polygon or polytheism.) There are some rules and patterns which can help us to deduce the structures of these ions, but before we can learn those, there are a handful that don’t follow the patterns that you just need to memorize.

For example, the conjugate base of sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4) is the polyatomic hydrogen sulfate anion (HSO− 4). In this article, we will discuss polyatomic ions. The prefix poly- means many, so a polyatomic ion is an ion that contains more than one atom. This differentiates polyatomic ions from monatomic ions, which contain only one atom. Examples of monatomic ions include,,, and many, many others.

Unlike monoatomic ions, which are composed of a single atom, polyatomic ions are composed of many atoms. (The prefix poly- means “many,” as in polygon or polytheism.)

The atoms in the sulphate ion are bonded together in the same way a molecule is. The charge, in this case two minus, is distributed across the whole ion.

This example problem demonstrates how to predict the molecular formulas of several compounds involving polyatomic ions. Many ions are monoatomic, which means that they are composed of just one atom.
