John Wesley Hardin was born in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas on May 26, 1853, to James Gibson Hardin and Mary Elizabeth Dixson. Hardin was the second surviving son of 10 children. His father was a circuit-riding Methodist preacher, lawyer and teacher, who named his son after John Wesley, the founder of Methodism.
